On April 9, 2026, FM’s Mock Trial team competed against Nottingham High School’s team. FM’s Mock Trial team was victorious in this round, winning by a margin of one point. This is the first time FM has won the county championship since 2021.
The case this year concerned a petit larceny of used cooking oil from a restaurant in Butler, New York. The case was written by the New York State Bar Association, and hundreds of Mock Trial teams in New York State deliberated this case.
Each week, FM’s team alternates from competing as prosecution to competing as defense. During this trial, FM was on the defense side, defending Ms. A. Carmen Erickson from charges of petit larceny and resisting arrest. Students acted as attorneys and witnesses in the trial. The trial was judged by Hon. Deborah H. Karalunas, the 5th NYS District Administrative judge.
One team member said, “‘I am so proud of us for the amazing job we did against our long-time opponent. Being on the trial team for the past 2 years and watching this team grow has been an absolute privilege and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for us.” She also praised the adults who helped the group,“None of this would have been possible without our advisor, Mr. Worm, and our attorney advisors Mr. Nocilly and Ms. Lok. They have put so much time and effort into getting us here and I can’t imagine our team without them.”
FM’s Mock Trial team now moves on to the regional round, where they will compete against various teams from other counties in New York State. Great job, FM Mock Trial!
