Last Saturday, March 21st, the CNY History Day Competition was held at the BOCES complex in Liverpool. Participating students had the opportunity to create historical research projects in the form of exhibits, documentaries, papers, performances,and websites. Students were grouped by age and the form of exhibits and had their projects judged for merit.
11 FMHS students will be advancing 8 projects to the New York State level competition! 17 students entered 13 projects in the local CNY competition overall.
Trevor Gates earned first place for his entry in the Paper category, “The Riot that Divided New York City and The United States: How the Reactions to the ‘Hard Hat Riot’ and Other Events on the Homefront Impacted American Politics.” Trevor was also awarded a Certificate from Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship.
Mari McGinnis was awarded first place for her entry in the Individual Exhibit category, “The United States Role in the Fall of the Berlin Wall.”
Maxwell Renya and Aadesh Roopnarine-Clarke received first place for the Group Exhibit category with their entry, “Grief to Governance.”

In the Solo Documentary category, first place went to Keya Choudhary with her entry, “Elixir Sulfanilamide Disaster: The Disaster That Shaped How Drugs are Distributed Today.
In the Group Documentary category, first place went to Nethra Balasubramanian and Meenakshi Thangadurai with their entry, “From Haymarket to History: The May Day Revolution that Reshaped Labor Rights.”
Mia Ziparo earned second place in the Individual exhibit for her entry ¨Beyond The Belt: Exploring Henry Ford’s Labor Reforms in the Wake of the Assembly Line.”

Noah Massey and Lucas Price received second place in the Group Documentary exhibit for ¨Legends Never Die: The Wilmeth Sidat-Singh Story.”
Second place also went to August Garcia Mueller in the Solo Documentary category for his exhibit “Tully Valley Landback: Reforming How We Think of Environmentalism and OUr Own Relationships with the Land.”
Evie Fumarola was awarded third place for her exhibit “Strike! A Story of Triumph of Small Voices.”
Eliot ElBayadi and Elliott Olech were awarded third place for their exhibit “Green Movement and Big Oil.”
Students who placed first or second are designated as State Qualifiers and will have the opportunity to compete at the State Competition on the campus of SUNY Oneonta on April 26th. Third place winners are designated as alternates to the competition.
