Could the first four picks of the NFL draft be quarterbacks?

History could be made during the 2021 NFL Draft.  The NFL Draft has been held since 1936 and never in its 84 year history have the first four players selected, all been quarterbacks.  This year, there is a very realistic possibility that this happens.

The 2021 draft is being held in Cleveland, Ohio on Thursday, April 29th, and the draft starts off with the Jacksonville Jaguars making the first selection.  This is one spot where it is essentially guaranteed that  a quarterback will be the pick.  Trevor Lawrence out of Clemson has been the projected number 1 overall pick since he stepped onto campus, and he has only reassured  those projections throughout his collegiate career.  He is the consensus number one overall prospect by all draft experts, and the Jacksonville Jaguars’ new coach Urban Meyer has been clear in his support for Lawrence earlier while working for Fox Sports calling him the greatest college quarterback ever.

The New York Jets are the other team with a selection all but confirmed.  After finishing 2-14 last season and trading away young quarterback Sam Darnold, who they selected third overall in the 2018 draft, they have landed the second overall pick.  It seems as if Zach Wilson, out of BYU will be the pick for New York. After being injured through parts of his first two seasons as a Cougar, he played a full season last year and was outstanding, finishing eighth in the Heisman Trophy voting. Wilson set the draft community on fire at his Pro Day when he rolled out to his left and fired a perfect throw back to his right, hitting his receiver right in stride. Following his impressive Pro Day, it seems that the Jets have made their decision especially following the trading of  Darnold to the Carolina Panthers.

According to most, the uncertainty of the draft will really start at the third pick with the San Francisco 49ers. General Manager John Lynch has confirmed that they will draft a quarterback making it the first time since the 1999 draft that the first three picks have been quarterbacks.  This selection will come down to Mac Jones from Alabama, Justin Fields from Ohio State and Trey Lance from North Dakota State with Jones being the rumored favorite.  Head Coach Kyle Shanahan, who will be making the decision, seems to like quarterbacks who will execute his system, as he is one of the best offensive minds in the league and doesn’t think he needs the most talented player.  Jones fits the mold of his former quarterbacks;  Matt Ryan, Kirk Cousins, and the player  he would be replacing, Jimmy Garoppolo.

With the first three picks guaranteed to be quarterbacks, the fourth pick being made by the Atlanta Falcons could make history. Per Adam Schefter, the Falcons are open to trading out of this slot and quarterback  needy teams are expected to be interested. If a team trades up to the fourth pick,  they would most likely be selecting a quarterback.  It would also be hard for the Falcons with their aging quarterback, Matt Ryan, to pass up on the Georgia native Justin Fields if he is available at fourth pick.  The only other player they have been linked to is Florida tight end Kyle Pitts.

Still it seems as if there is a high chance that the fourth pick, whether it is made by the Falcons or some other rumored teams, will be a quarterback.
