The classic summer Olympic Games we all know and love are returning to the USA for the first time since 1996. This will be taking place in the summer of 2028 in Los Angeles, California.
Most of the Olympic venues will be spread throughout the greater Los Angeles area, but some are across the United States. Surfing and volleyball will be held in Orange County. Softball will be happening in the Oklahoma City area and football (soccer) matches will be held in various locations. Some event locations are still to be confirmed.
Paralympic events will take place in many of the same venues as the Olympic Games, primarily located within the greater Los Angeles area. These events will take place in the weeks following the Olympics.
One of the most iconic sports, swimming, will take place inside the SoFi Stadium. This is historic for multiple reasons, including it being the largest swimming venue in Olympic history. This is the first time an Olympic swimming event will be held inside a football stadium, following the success of the 2024 US swimming trials at Lucas Oil Stadium.
While none of the classic events we’ve all grown to love are leaving, several new sports will be joining the lineup. The events making their debut in 2028 include flag football, squash, lacrosse, cricket, baseball, and softball.
There are also many updates to existing Olympic sports. Many of these editions will be mixed events, in which men and women compete on a team together instead of being separated. Swimming will be adding the 50-meter distance to backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly, and the 50-meter freestyle has been a long-reigning fan-favorite event.
With the issue of climate change and global warming looming over everyone’s heads, the LA 2028 Olympics are introducing a sustainability and impact plan, trying to make a lasting positive impact on the local communities.
