On Friday, September 13th, the boys’ varsity soccer team hosted CNS in an electric matchup on the turf. The final outcome was a big 4-1 win over CNS, and afterwards there was an opportunity to get a postgame interview with one of FM’s players.
From the start, the Hornets came out aggressive as Niko Morris and Esref Canli each scored a goal in quick succession with about 20 minutes left in the first half. The team then finished off the half by defending well and keeping pressure on CNS as they headed into halftime up 2-0.
Following the short intermission, the team showed that they were not taking their foot off the gas as Thomas Helmer scored a bar down goal with 31 minutes remaining. However FM was not finished: Abdalla Elfituri was able to sneak in one last goal as the last minutes ticked down. Although the team gave up one goal to CNS in the second half, that didn’t stop them from pushing through and taking a victory into the weekend.
Postgame there was an opportunity to interview teammate Henry Dougherty.
Question: When you’re on the pitch and/or have the ball, does what you do come naturally or is it planned?
Dougherty: “It depends, we have a system in place but when it comes down to it you have to rely on your instincts.”
Question: After the match tonight, do you think the team is in a good spot?
Dougherty: “I think we are in a great spot with momentum going into the next week.”
Question: What do you enjoy the most about the team and/or the sport?
Dougherty: “I enjoy the atmosphere, getting to play the sport I have loved since I was a child, and I have made some great friends.”
Be sure to catch a match. They are very entertaining and the games will end before you know it. The last home game is October 15th, so be there. Good luck to the FM boys’ varsity soccer team! And go Hornets!
