Senior FM field hockey player and co-captain, Ella Herber, makes a play for the ball in the team’s game against Liverpool in September.

The Fayetteville-Manlius field hockey team recently marked the closing of their 2022 fall season. The girls finished with a winning record of 10-7, improving from last season’s record of 8-6. The season opener against Cortland resulted in a 7-0 win for the Hornets on 9/1, and they would later begin a strong winning streak of seven games throughout most of September.

Highlighted in this winning streak was a relentless 1-0 overtime win against the Liverpool Warriors. The overtime goal was scored by senior forward, Sarah Porter, which occurred after a key save from senior goalkeeper, Kaleigh Hamilton, on a penalty shot.

The team fell short to Baldwinsville with a score of 3-2 and to Rome with a score of 1-0 toward the end of the regular season, but the Hornets kept their heads up and swept Liverpool with a score of 3-0 in the quarterfinal sectional game. Despite the Hornets’ indestructible bond and vitality, the girls lost their fight in the semi-final sectional game to eventual champion, Cicero-North Syracuse, with a score of 3-1.

Reflecting on the season, co-captain Ella Herber said, “I’m so grateful for such a fun season, though it went by so fast. There were a lot of obstacles our team had to get through together but we went out on a strong note.” A total of seven seniors will be leaving the program, but the remainder of the team is ecstatic for the next season and they hope to dominate as many opponents as possible.
