Bernie Sanders sits for the cold inauguration day in his coat and now famous mittens.

One unforeseen internet phenomenon of 2021: Bernie Sander’s woolen mittens. At the 2021 inauguration ceremony, Sanders could be seen bundling up in his winter attire and his big wooly mittens that managed to capture the internet’s attention. Overnight, photos of Sanders keeping warm turned into trending memes. Hilarious memes of Bernie making an appearance in movies such as “Deadpool” and “Bird Box” had fans begging for more.  New and creative memes were added to the internet daily, even Bernie himself couldn’t get enough!

Sanders took the opportunity and sold articles of clothing and stickers to fans for charity. T-shirts, mugs, and hats were all stamped with Bernie Sanders and his famous mittens. The merchandise sold out almost instantly. Overall 1.8 million dollars in profit were made and Sanders wanted to give back to those in his home state, Vermont. The proceeds will go to organizations such as the Meals on Wheels program, Vermont Parent Child Network, and numerous senior centers located throughout Vermont.

In an NBC article Sanders said, “But even this amount of money is no substitute for action by Congress, and I will be doing everything I can in Washington to make sure working people in Vermont and across the country get the relief they need in the middle of the worst crisis we’ve faced since the Great Depression.”  Sanders wanted to help give back to his hometown, which was hit especially hard with the ongoing CoronaVirus pandemic.
