The 2025 US Open was full of excitement, surprises, and intensity. Even if the winners might not have been surprising to anyone, the lead up to the finals was anything but predictable. This year’s tournament at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center will definitely be one to remember.
The men’s final was exactly what fans had anticipated, a rematch between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. Sinner came in as the defending champion and world No. 1, and he was certainly seeming to be the favorite. Nevertheless, Alcaraz had something to prove after losing to Sinner at Wimbledon earlier this year and he came out swinging, literally. In the first set Alcaraz was mixing powerful baseline shots with some sneaky drop shots that left Sinner scrambling. The crowd was on their feet when Alcaraz took it 6-2. Sinner came back strong in the second set, showing exactly why he’s world No. 1, and he even managed to take it 6-3. But Alcaraz turned it up in the third set and crushed it 6-1. The fourth set was close and there were some long rallies that made everyone hold their breath, but Alcaraz stayed focused and kept it steady in order to close it out 6-4. This win was important for Alcaraz because it’s his second US Open title and sixth major overall. In addition to this, he’s back at No. 1 in the world.
The women’s final was just as exciting. Aryna Sabalenka was defending her title and facing Amanda Anisimova, who had been playing wonderfully all tournament even beating world No. 2 Iga Świątek. Anisimova was hoping to win her first major which added to the intenseness of the final. Sabalenka’s powerful serves and aggressive play at the baseline gave her the edge from the start. She took the first set 6-3, hitting shots that left Anisimova running all over the court. The second set was way closer and it even went to a tiebreak. Anisimova kept fighting, but Sabalenka stayed calm and finished it 7-6(3). The win was Sabalenka’s second consecutive US Open title, solidifying her place as one of the top players in women’s tennis.
