Want something to do during the holidays? Drive over to Onondaga Lake for the Lights on the Lake showcase! I recently visited the site and would definitely recommend the experience.
Upon arriving on site, following a few decorative sponsor signs, you will be greeted by a cheerful Santa at the paying booth–make sure to say hi! Anyways, the rest of the experience is an elaborate road with displays filled on each side. The contrast between the bright lights and the dark night landscape make for quite a surreal experience.
My favorite part was the variety of techniques and structures used–arches, houses, animated scenes, animals, snowmen, you name it, it’s most likely there. And another detail is that the road and displays never seem to end; I really enjoy and appreciate how much effort the organizers put into this event every year to make it as fulfilling as possible.
I refrained from including too many visuals because that would spoil your experience. The takeaway here is that this is an activity that is definitely worth it, so plan ahead. To conclude, here are some tips to enhance your Lights on the Lake visit:
Tip #1: Arrive early. The event lasts from 5:00-10:00 pm each day, so try to schedule your visit on a day without too much to do. The experience is a lot better when you’re not stuck in an excessively long train of cars.
Tip #2: Get out your camera! The slow drive allows the perfect opportunity to snap photos or take videos of your favorite displays.
Tip #3: Roll down the window. This allows for a better view of the lights and clearer photos. There’s also the chance to enjoy the crisp breeze in the middle of winter….ok maybe that’s just me…
Tip #4: Go with family and friends. This type of experience is definitely best with people you know–you can share your favorite parts with one another! Especially since there are displays on either side of the path, so you wouldn’t want to miss out on any good photo opportunities.
Happy (early) Holidays!
