On Saturday, October 26, 2024, over 200 high schoolers from all over Syracuse gathered at Manlius Pebble Hill School. Their goal? To tackle the socio-economic issues of the world.
FM had 7 guest chairs and nearly 30 delegates, representing countries such as Norway and even companies, for example, Exxon Mobil. The committees ranged from the Economic and Social Council, who aimed to find a solution to discrimination in the workplace, to the European Union in 2050, trying to implement a migration policy and regulate AI.
Donations made to MPHMUN went to LiteracyCNY, a local nonprofit seeking to provide individuals with free technological support.
During the opening ceremonies, guest speaker Dr. Hamid Ekbia from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs discussed AI and its ability to shape our future. To commemorate the 25th anniversary of MPHMUN, former club advisor Dr. Jeffrey Mangram spoke on the importance of Model UN and global citizenship. Committee sessions then commenced, where delegates worked tirelessly to come to agreements and form resolutions.
Model UN is one of the most recognized clubs at FM. MPHMUN was the club’s kickoff to the school year, and it had a successful turnout. Award winners included:
Chase Jaconski and Stella Affeldt – European Union 2050
Avya Mangla – Economic and Social Council
Anqi Geng, Maggie Huang, and Rishi Kaul – World Health Organization
In addition, FM won the Outstanding Delegation award. Great job FM-MUN, and congrats on another successful conference!
