On October 15th, journalism students, advanced broadcast journalism students, and Buzz club members from Fayetteville-Manlius High School attended the annual ESSPA (Empire State Student Press Association) Conference at SU’s Newhouse School.
At the conference, students from across New York had the opportunity to attend sessions with local reporters, professors, editors, and more. Speakers presented on topics such as “Interviewing Techniques” and “Content Creation in the Digital Age.” Some sessions were seminars, whereas others were hands on with practice writing scripts or reporting news on camera.
In addition to networking with student organizations from across the state, FMHS students competed in the ESSPA Awards, judged by industry and Syracuse University professionals. The awards ceremony was a big success for many FM students and groups.
FM’s student news publication The Buzz won Best Overall Newspaper. The Buzz also won a bronze award for “Print Layout Design.”
FMTV’s Quinn Coughlin was a big winner for BroJo, taking first place in the “Best News Story” category.
FMTV’s Jeremy Albert won Silver in the “School Special Topics,” Manal Thib and Ellie Comprix won Silver in the “Community Feature Story” category, FM-SPN won the silver award in the “Best Sports Coverage” category.
FMTV was yet again a finalist in the “Best TV Show” category, winning Bronze.
In addition to the conference, students got to spend time on Syracuse University’s campus and enjoy lunch on Marshall Street. This event is yet another reason to take electives like journalism and broadcast journalism at FMHS.
