Bright pink shirts and friendly faces greeted the new freshmen class as they walked into their first day of high school. On September 3, Link Crew Day commenced in the House I Gym where the Class of ‘28 was welcomed to high school by none other than the Link Crew Leaders. This was just the beginning of a day jam packed with activities, games, and more!
Link Crew Day 2024 started off with some familiar activities such as “Simon Says.” Though the activities might have appeared childish for these new high schoolers, they certainly got people to laugh and feel more comfortable. After some whole group challenges, the class was split into groups of eight and introduced to their Link Leaders. The new groups ventured out of the gym and to their classrooms for the next hour and a half. During that time, students learned more about each other and the high school experience through games such as “Count Off” and “64 Squares.”
Before heading out for the school tour, the groups dressed up in the theme that their Link Leaders had meticulously planned. Throughout the school everything from Minions, to unicorns, to superheroes could be spotted! Now appropriately dressed, Link Leaders led their freshmen through the school (hoping that at least one of them wouldn’t get lost later in the day…). The tours ended in the cafeteria where students ate their lunches to fuel up for the second half of the day.
After lunch, there was an assembly in the gym where Mr. McNamara gave a very impactful demonstration. While ripping up a dollar bill, he explained how wasting a day is like shredding a dollar. Every individual day might not feel significant, but throughout a week, month, year, and high school career, they add up. An audible reaction could be heard from the group, though whether it was in response to the message or to the ripped dollar bill could be debated.
With this impactful lesson, the freshmen went off for their last event of the day– going to their classes. They got to experience the rush of speed walking through the halls and the excitement of meeting their teachers for the first time. For the next few hours the students got a preview of what the year ahead would be like. Smiles and hints of first day jitters were on many faces throughout the day. At 2:07 PM the bell rang for a final time and put an end to a successful Link Crew Day!
