Premier League: What went down in one of the best soccer seasons in history

After an incredible season, with many battles all the way to the final day, the Premier League season has ended, and what an incredible ride it was. The Premier League is the top league in England, and is considered by many to be the highest quality league in the world. Let’s take a look at what happened.

Manchester City won the title with Liverpool taking second place in an incredible race to the title. Manchester City and Liverpool are both some of the best teams in the world. Manchester City has had a meteoric rise to the top led by one of the best coaches, Pep Guardiola. Liverpool is in the Champions League Final this year, and were on for winning an incredible 4 trophies in a single season. On the final day, Liverpool needed a win, and a draw or loss for Manchester City in order to win the title. After Manchester City went 2-0 down with 15 minutes to play, all hope seemed lost for them. However, the team scored 3 goals in under 5 minutes and held the lead to win the title.

Chelsea FC finished 3rd behind a strong performance from them at the start but they started to tail off near the end of the season and nearly got dragged into a battle for 4th with Tottenham and Arsenal.

Tottenham took the final Champions League qualification place, beating out Arsenal in an intense battle for 4th place. Arsenal held the advantage pretty much all season, but losses against Tottenham away and Newcastle away gave Tottenham the advantage on the final day. Tottenham took the opportunity and won 5-0 against Norwich, with winger Heung-Min Son taking home the most goals scored award sharing it with Liverpool’s Mohammed Salah.

Manchester United finished in 6th in a disastrous season for them featuring many embarrassing losses, including one to Watford and a 4-0 defeat to Brighton, and took the second Europa League place above West Ham United. Manchester United is one of the most historic clubs in England, and is usually fighting for the championship. They had a very rough start to the year and fired their coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after 3 seasons with the team. After that, things didn’t improve too much. Bringing in Erik Ten Hag has Manchester United fans excited for the future.

Newcastle have been on an incredible run of form to end the season after a massive January transfer window. After the Saudi Public Investment Fund took ownership of the club, Newcastle spent 145 million dollars on transfers headlined by midfielder Bruno Guimares and full back Kieran Trippier. Because of their lavish spending, Newcastle not only avoided looming relegation, but also got themselves up into 11th place. Since the end of 2021, Newcastle has been the 4th best team in the Premier League according to transfermarkt’s table.

Norwich City, Watford, and Burnley are being relegated to the 2nd tier, the championship, after a hard fought battle with Leeds and Everton. Relegation is where the worst teams have to go down to play at a lower level after a bad performance in their current tier. Norwich and Watford never really tried to avoid relegation as they were promoted to the EPL last season. Burnley however, have been in the EPL since 2017 and it’s a shock to see them relegated.

Three new teams will be entering the Premier League. Fulham FC, AFC Bournemouth, and Nottingham Forest are going up to the Premier League. Fulham FCis  a lot like Norwich and Watford, in the sense that they often go back and forth between the Premier League and the Championship. The other two clubs are relative newcomers to the EPL.

Overall, it’s been a very exciting season, and next season is expected to  be just as good. Every battle for an important position went down to the very last day, and we hope to see more of that.
